While I'm writing this story ,It is around 1 AM at Ban Seliang Haeng 3 Village, Khao Kho’ Mountain, which is the house where I plan to live after retirement. If I were in Bangkok, I would have fallen asleep by 10-11 PM. But the atmosphere here makes me not want to sleep because I want to keep these moments for as long as possible.
As I type this, the temperature is around 19 degrees Celsius. I am sitting on the balcony, listening to the chirping of crickets and the singing of small frogs, competing with each other to sing with joy without getting tired. It made me think that the happiness of crickets and frogs is really simple, unlike the happiness of people that requires a lot of money. And sometimes, even after spending a lot of money, you still can't find happiness.
As I write this, the fog is very thick. I can see the mist running through the light bulb, making the light bulb look very white of fog stream. Every atom I breathe in feels like the air that enters my lungs is really pure. It is so refreshing. And I hope to see the sea of fog tomorrow. (and the morning, yes some fog but not sea fog ,it look like a lake of fog)
The atmosphere of this evening makes me feel the word "why" more. When people are looking for something or doing something routine, have you ever asked yourself "why are you doing this or why are you doing it"? And if the word "why" is money, if you do it and don't get money, will you still do it? And if you can do it and get money, what is the "why" of money?
Some people might say to buy an iPhone 15 ProMax, some would say to buy a BYD SEAL performance, and some don't know what to do with it, but I'll find and collect it(money) first. Someone may say, “the future is uncertain, so I'll find it first” . But in another sense, it means that you don't know what your "why" is. And I don't know for others, but I know what my "why" is.
My "why" has many levels. But if I had to answer what the highest "why" is, the answer is that the optometrist in Thailand is working well. They puts the health of the people first, not to deceive, not to be like a shepherd man, optometrists work to their full potential, not to do rough work, shoddy work, and then make promotional scams.
Several days ago,I saw the police day promotion in Facebook feed, I thought it was very funny joke that optical business always dose. But there is still one advantage: it made me know that there is a “police day”. But I am not a police officer, but I believe that if I went in the shop for promotion, I would get the promotion too, even I’m not the police. In another sense, is this misleading consumers?
An another "why" is to work to help patients who have problems related to the visual system, whether it is vision problems, focus problems, or problems with the coordination of the two eyes. Know the real problem and the correct and appropriate solution. And make the patient have a better quality of life. Working adults can work more efficiently. Children can learn to their full potential. Retirees can travel and see the world to the fullest. Both work and happiness. And my "why" is the happiness of seeing people happy. Even one day, but not today, suppose to I’m a rich person and no need to work for money ,but I still work in this profession because I’ve to do it and my happiness still be there.
Once the "why" is clear, you need to define "how" to make it happen. What I can think of is to study, find knowledge, and practice. The Buddha called it "#hearing, #thinking, #asking, and #writing." And another Dharma that is the Dharma of the Buddha that leads to success is the four factors of success: #love, #effort, #attention, and #contemplation. And another Dharma is "#learning, #practicing, and #staying with it." These Dharmas will nourish passion during the creation of “how."
Once the knowledge is created, it is passed on to the work of optometry and to the book to pass on knowledge and experience as a guideline for those who are interested in this journey.
Many people burn out because they run out of passion. And the cause of burnout comes from many factors, such as optometrists who graduate with the intention of being doctors, plan for working to help people see the world better, but are hired to work at a glasses store that focuses on selling things. The tools are not enough, the examination room is not long enough, the time is not enough but huge Frame Stock. They Do not allow the doctor to do exam too long and do not allow the doctor detailed inspection because they are afraid of losing the opportunity to sell things.
In the long run, they hate their job. Finally, they run out of passion and burn out eventually. So Love for what you do is very important. But if you love money, the problem is that if you do good and don't make money, you will don't do good. If you do bad and make money, you will do it. But this is not working for all even in you in long term and is not worthy of being a burden on the human world.
The "what" that comes from the foundation of the "why" and the path is the "how" leads to the "what" or the product that comes out is the work of craft optical treatment that is conveyed through frames and lenses, which is a beautiful work of art and the art of optometry, which helps both look good and have a good life.
Therefore, glasses are not just glasses, but have a base story of science in many fields, including architecture, fashion design, engineering, and optometry, to create the "what" that we known as “glasses".
However, there is another type of glasses that sees glasses as just accessories with a marketing base story with hard sales, two-for-one, three-for-one promotions,99.9999% discount, because the "why" of this group is money. but it very funny to discount for make money.
But neither is right or wrong. It is simply a matter of the value of each individual. People who love wine will pay hundred thousand for a bottle. People who love audio equipment will pay hundreds of thousands or millions. People who love expensive mobile phones will pay. People who love expensive handbags will pay. People who love health will pay. Therefore, everything has the most delicate and the most crude to meet the value of each person. This is why brand positioning is important to show a clear position in the market, what group they belong to, and who they make products and services for.
Optometry is the same. Find your "why". If your "why" is to pass on knowledge and experience through your work to help people see better, do as I have said above. But if your "why" is money, then play the market a lot, sell cheating cheap, give a lot of bonuses, and have good promotions. Then it depends on who is cheaper. Deep down, it is about who has the longer resources. And it is important not to use a toothpick to pry open a log. It will only break. Because you can not made mass cheap product to fight product from china, at all. Shoppee is prove!!!
"The Mortician: Sup-pa-rue', movie” is a good example. A small-budget movie with a budget of only 10 million baht was able to create value for a movie that created value of more than 600 million baht. Both the Prime Minister and the ministers flocked to support the movie by buying out the theaters and raising the issue of soft power.
Therefore, the point is not how much capital you have or how much you sell. It is about how much value you can create on the capital you have. For example, if a patient can afford to pay a certain amount, how can you make that pair of lenses the best? How do you examine? How do you control the quality of work? How do you place the center? How do you bend the glasses? Do it to the best of your ability.
These are all about creating value. It does not always have to be measured in terms of money. but It could be about happiness, relationships, or other things.
However, the problem is that most of this industry is undervaluing. People pay a lot but get little, or it is not worth the price. When they feel that it is not worth the price, consumers will try to negotiate the price as much as possible. Sellers will also try to reduce the price as much as possible. This is a reflection of an undervalued product.
In conclusion, there is nothing much to it. The view is beautiful and the atmosphere is good. So I used my fingers to type down my thoughts.
Thank you for following me. I don't upload much on this page, but I work every day. I sneak away to travel occasionally, but I mostly do it on my website. And most of it is not shared on the page. If you want to read or study, go to www.loftoptometry.com. In case there is any content that you are interested in or looking for, I hope you will find the answer. If you don't, you can call 090-553-6554. I am happy to answer any questions.
Here is a beautiful view of the front of the house at Ban Seliang Haeng 3, Nong Mae Na, Khao Kho, which is the house where I often sneak away to recharge here and hope to retire here. Grow vegetables, grow grass, raise cats, write books, read books, and be happy.
Today I came to recharge my battery at my house in Khao Kho, which is the house I plan to retire in the future. I will read books, write academic papers, and pass them on to future generations of optometrists. I will make sure that everyone who is interested can access and have free knowledge. My hope is that universities can do more than free knowledge on the internet in order to make the profession thrive. If university-level education cannot provide deeper knowledge, it will be difficult for the profession to thrive and be a real support for people.
Enjoy, Thank you your readings.
